Judge Postpones Okah’s Sentence To March 18th 2013

Henry Okah
By Channelstv.com

The judge presiding over the sentencing of Henry Okah in the Johannesburg High Court, Neels Claassen has postponed the case again to the 18th, 19th, and 20th of March.
Although the judge had said he would not allow any other postponement, he said he had to do this in order to give Mr. Okah’s new legal team time to get used to the notes left by the old legal team.
The new team led by Gerrit Miller requested for the time following the withdrawal of the former team led by Lucky Multulanla.
The prosecution described the request as a ploy to delay the delivery of justice but Judge Claassen went ahead to grant the plea because, as he said, he didn’t want to force the new team.
If the hearing had held today, witnesses from Nigeria and the United States would have testified in a bid to mitigate the sentencing of terror suspect, Henry Okah following the request of his former attorney, Mr. Multulanla at his last appearance on the 1st of February, to give witnesses time to get to South Africa to testify.
Mr. Okah intended calling at least five people to testify.
He was found guilty in January of 13 counts of terrorism, including engaging in terrorist activities, conspiracy to engage in terrorist activities, and delivering, placing, and detonating an explosive device.
The charges related to two car bombs in Abuja, Nigeria, in which 12 people were killed and 36 injured on October 1, 2010, the anniversary of the Nigeria’s independence, and another two explosions in the southern Nigerian city of Warri, earlier in March 2010.

French Hostages: Defense HQ Demands Boko Haram Gets In Touch By Calling on 08154429346 Not Via YouTube

French Hostages: Defense HQ Demands Boko Haram Gets In Touch By Calling on 08154429346 Not Via YouTube
The Defence Headquarters yesterday asked Boko Haram sect to channel whatever demand they have concerning the foreign hostages the sect is holding to the Joint Task Force (JTF) instead of using YouTube.
Since the French tourists have been kidnapped, there has been no report of their locations but the sect reportedly demands for some conditions to be met before they could release them, however, the Defence Headquarters said they don’t react to YouTube.
Speaking with the Defence correspondents in his office, the spokesman of the military, Col Yerima Mohammed argued that the sect have the contact numbers of the JTF hence they have no excuse for not contacting them.
“On the French citizens held hostage by Boko Haram, the Defence Headquarters wishes to make the following clarifications regarding the video clip on the Youtube purportedly released by Boko Haram in which it listed conditions for the release of the French family it is holding hostage. The Defence Headquarters do not make official response to video on the YouTube.
“If the Boko Haram group wishes to express concern about their members being held, they ought to have channeled their demands through the JTF telephone help lines which they are conversant with. These numbers for the sake of repetition are 08064174066, 08154429346 and 07064174066.”

Nicki Minaj Says American Idol Is “Not a Singing Competition”

One of the most pernicious myths about pop music is that singers with great voices are somehow more “real” than ones whose voices are merely very good. Certainly, vocals do count to some extent—but pop is not opera.
It’s about more than an impressive set of pipes. It’s about operating in a world of symbols and gestures: Making an image, embodying a narrative, taking audiences on a journey.
But for some reason, it feels cheap to admit this, and doubly cheap to admit it in the context of a televised singing competition, which relies heavily on selling the “All you need is a voice and a dream” angle. Which is why it was so refreshing to see Nicki Minaj of American Idol gleefully destroy the notion of a vocal meritocracy on Twitter recently:
What do You think guys? Is Nicki Minaj on or off point? Leave your comments below.

Harry Styles Gets Hit In Crotch With Shoe Thrown By Fan At Concert

Harry Styles is already a shoo-in for most viral clip of the week, painful as it might have been.
The One Direction singer buckled over in pain after a fan launched a shoe at the stage — hitting him square in the groin - during a show in Glasgow, Scotland on Tuesday night, and we’ve got the cringe-worthy clip for you right here.
At first, Harry, 19, caught a shoe one fan launched onto the stage, but the second incoming shoe hit him, causing him to double over on the ground in pain. After a few moments to let the shock wear off, Harry rebooted and continued on with the gig.

Fantasia Gets Apology From Jet Magazine After Editor Calls Her An Illiterate

Fantasia, Jet Magazine
(Photo: JET Magazine)
Fantasia Barrino has gotten justice for an insult. The singer received an apology from the editor of Jetmagazine for a comment left on the editor’s personal Facebook page.
“The fact that I wasted an hour of my workday,” posted Mitzi Miller, the Editor-in-Chief of Jet, “writing a press release to address an issue created by a person who cannot even read it is just… #whyiwannaBahousewife.”
The problem stemmed from Barrino expressing her anger about Jet using an older photo of her for the cover. In response, Miller said that, while she was disappointed in Barrino’s displeasure with the cover, Jet stood by its decision to run the photo. Not long after the exchange, Miller posted her off-the-cuff comment.
Shortly after the website Madamenoire ran the comment, Miller issued a statement. “I apologize for the lack of sensitivity shown in my Facebook post,” wrote Miller. “It was a thoughtless comment made during a moment of frustration. It was unprofessional and not representative of the JET mission, which is to uplift. I regret letting my emotions get the best of me. I am truly apologetic.” At press time, there was no response from Fantasia on the matter.

Interviews: iROKOtv CEO Jason Njoku: "Nollywood Films Try to Tell Africa's Story"

Jason Njoku

Dubbed the “Netflix of Africa” iROKOtv has officially brought Nollywood films to the Internet and to viewers all around the globe. iROKOtv CEO Jason Njoku’s 3-year-old company now has 800,000 registered users and offices in London, New York, Johannesburg and Lagos. The tech entrepreneur spoke to BET.com about how he’s helping to digitally distribute the popular Nigerian films.

Would you define Nollywood for us?Nollywood is a film industry centered in mostly Nigeria and Ghana. But they are largely Nigerian productions, which create films for Africans about Africans. Many of the movies center around the dynamics of nuclear families and how they deal with traditional stories and issues from pre-colonial Africa. Other movies are based around marriage, religion, royalty, lack of success and even coping with illness. Nollywood films try to tell Africa’s story in modern life.
How did you come up with the idea for iROKOtv?
I grew up in the United Kingdom. I largely benefited from the power of the Internet, from usage and sites like Netflix. I heard about Nollywood in 2009 and I saw that my mom spent most of her spare time watching these movies. She would ask me to get her some good ones. I would go online to try to find them and I found it pretty amazing there wasn’t a way for her to buy them. The only way to get them was down at the local mom and pop store. It was really amazing and popular content, but the distribution was lacking.
Once you realized the demand for Nollywood films, when did you know you could be a part of the business of distributing them?
I jumped on a plane from London to Lagos to do a bit of fact finding and I found that no one was attempting to do this. So I thought it would be a good idea for someone like myself to take it on. I originally negotiated with a handful of production houses. We put a couple of hundred movies online, and we were able to make a return on our investment. We kept acquiring more movies and putting them online.
Where does most of iROKOtv’s traffic come from?
Our traffic comes from London, India, Australia, Moldavia, the Caribbean and our largest market is in the United States. We’ve made the accessibility and the discovery of these movies that much easier. We’ve partnered with the production houses to help them deliver their movies to as many people as possible.
What do you think has been key to iROKOtv’s booming success?
Nollywood is one of the largest film industries to emerge and definitely one of the most successful ones. The question became how would people globally around the world gain access to this popular content from Africa? What we did at iROKOtv is to make available the largest catalog of Nigerian movies. We have 5,000 movies available to watch on our website. We’ve multiplied the ability to watch and enjoy these films. The movies have been out there for a long time — they’ve been very popular from day one. We took great content and made it widely available to anyone who has an Internet connection.

Lil Wayne Responds to Pitbull Diss

The tension between Lil Wayne and local stars in his adopted home city of Miami continues to boil over in the wake of his inflammatory comments about the Miami Heat. Wayne's apology for his vulgar statements did not satisfy 305 legends Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell, Trick Daddy and Pitbull, who have all publicly expressed their distaste for the New Orleans native’s disrespect.
Pitbull recently released a diss track aimed at Weezy, telling him "don't s--t where you eat," over Baauer’s Internet hit "Harlem Shake." Wayne took to Twitter early this morning (February 27) to reply, tweeting "Dam pit bull bro I thought u was kool." Pitbull’s freestyle "Harlem Shake (Welcome 2 Dade County)" mocked the Cash Money MC’s financial situation with the rhyme, "You got money, yeah that's sweet / But we all know Slim and Baby really eat / You talk Miami, yes you talkin' Heat."
Trick Daddy and Uncle Luke are using the sports-related beef to fuel a movement to get Wayne’s Young Money artists out of rotation on local radio and return the shine to Miami-based musicians. "We came up in a city that we lived through three, four or five hurricanes and two major riots. I can’t go nowhere else, this my home," said Trick to Miami’s 99 Jamz last Thursday. Former 2 Live Crew front man Luke penned a scathing editorial about Weezy in the New Miami Times that called for the city and its stars to stop letting Wayne treat Miami “like his b---h."
Wayne was apologetic for his rant in a call to 99 Jamz on February 21. "As far as the city of Miami, I do wanna apologize for the misunderstanding and whatever has everybody thinking that I have something against the city, because that’s totally wrong," Wayne said. "These people accepted me with open arms since day one, since I was a Hot Boy. It’s just totally sports, this ain’t got nothing to do with the city of Miami."
Wayne, who’s album I Am Not a Human Being II is due later this year, did not back down from personal jabs taken at Heat players Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, though.

Well that’s what it looks like to me the way Kim’s eyes are closed, it looks like she is in the deepest throes of ecstasy. So much for keeping their relationship private & out of the pubic eye.
Following her recent $500,000 visit to Nigeria for Darey’s Love Like A Movie concert last week Kim Kardashian is once again in the news, this time for posing nude with boyfriend & father of her unborn child Kanye West on the cover of L’Officiel Hommes a French Men’s Magazine.

SMH: 15-Year-Old Rape Victim Sentenced To 100 Lashes For Pre-Marital Sex After Getting Impregnated By Her Own Father

185688_10151220637352602_85633787_n
A 15-year-old sexual assault victim has been sentenced to 100 lashes for engaging in premarital sex, court officials said.
Via BBC News reports:
The charges against the girl were brought against her last year after police investigated accusations that her stepfather had raped her and killed their baby. He is still to face trial.
Prosecutors said her conviction did not relate to the rape case.
Amnesty International condemned the punishment as “cruel, degrading and inhumane”.
The government said it did not agree with the punishment and that it would look into changing the law.
Zaima Nasheed, a spokesperson for the juvenile court, said the girl was also ordered to remain under house arrest at a children’s home for eight months.
She defended the punishment, saying the girl had willingly committed an act outside of the law.
Officials said she would receive the punishment when she turns 18, unless she requested it earlier.
The case was sent for prosecution after police were called to investigate a dead baby buried on the island of Feydhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, in the north of the country.
Her stepfather was accused of raping her and impregnating her before killing the baby. The girl’s mother also faces charges for failing to report the abuse to the authorities.
The legal system of the Maldives, an Islamic archipelago with a population of some 400,000, has elements of Islamic law (Sharia) as well as English common law.
Ahmed Faiz, a researcher with Amnesty International, said flogging was “cruel, degrading and inhumane” and urged the authorities to abolish it.
“We are very surprised that the government is not doing anything to stop this punishment – to remove it altogether from the statute books.”
“This is not the only case. It is happening frequently – only last month there was another girl who was sexually abused and sentenced to lashes.”
He said he did not know when the punishment was last carried out as people were not willing to discuss it openly.
This is just a grave and sad display of injustice. Instead of being helped, women and little girls are being punished for being the victim while the rapists go free. We only have one thing to say about this…

Bobby Brown Sentenced to 55 Days in Jail for DUI

Bobby Brown

The third time was not the charm for Bobby Brown. A California judge sentenced the R&B great to 55 days in jail for a recent DUI charge, the third such offense on his record.
According to TMZ, Brown pled no contest to the charges on Tuesday. In addition to the jail time the New Edition band member is on probation for four years and must complete an 18-month alcohol program.
Brown was arrested in October 2012 after he failed a field sobriety test during a traffic stop. Los Angeles police pulled over Brown’s vehicle when they noticed him driving erratically. Prior to the October arrest, the 43-year-old entertainer was jailed for operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .12, the legal limit is .08, in March. Brown caught his first DUI conviction in 1996.
The court has given the R&B bad boy until March 20 to turn himself into the authorities, and in the meantime he must attend 3 AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meetings per week.

Giorgio Armani Womenswear Fall/ Winter 2013-2014

GARÇONNEIt’s a way of living, and interpreting femininity - the kind of independent spirit that ignores conformism and all that is commonplaceIt’s an autonomous way of dressing and mixing pieces, a personal attitude to pairing accessories, that defines a particular style and character.Garçonne features simple lines, while its perfect cuts and combinations of materials transform it into something decidedly avant-garde.Black, its overarching colour, enhances the figure, emphasizing its shape with jewelled jackets, trousers and Skirts-cum-bermuda shorts, as well as with long, hip-hugging skirts that end in a bias cut. Hints of white create luminosity and contrast, as do the golden fabrics paired with lacquered black shoes and accessories.Calculated eccentricity shines through in berets featuring special workmanship in woven velvet, their spherical forms adorning the head, as well as in exquisite suspenders, evening and daywear “garçonne” jumpsuits and embroidered tops.Woven, lacquered high-heeled shoes leave a luminous wake. Black onyx buckles are a common thread running through the jewellery, and make their mark on accessories, echoing the button motif that also runs through the collection.source of Collection by Armani
